The Greater Kruger is a patchwork of private reserves along the western boundary of Kruger National Park. With the fences to Kruger dropped, wildlife moves freely across the whole ecosystem — so game viewing is Kruger-quality, but the private concessions add what the national park can’t: off-road driving to sightings, night drives, walking safaris and a fraction of the vehicles. This is where many of South Africa’s finest lodges sit, each reserve with its own character.
Timbavati Private Nature Reserve
Open to Kruger with no fences, Timbavati is famous as the home of the rare white lion and delivers superb leopard and lion viewing. Low lodge density and a two-vehicle-per-sighting rule keep it exclusive and quiet.
