iSimangaliso Wetland Park
South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site (the former Greater St Lucia Wetland Park) links eight ecosystems across lakes, wetlands and a marine reserve. Elephant, rhino, hippo and crocodile share the map with humpback whales, nesting turtles and 500+ birds.

Wildlife & Ecology
The region’s exceptional feature is ecological variety: dry sand forest, savanna, riverine woodland, coastal dune forest, wetlands and marine habitat. Rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, nyala and a particularly rich bird list occur inland, while turtles, dolphins and seasonal whales use the coast.
Best Time to Visit
May to September is cooler and drier for bush wildlife. November to March is hot and humid but suits turtle nesting, summer birds and a greener landscape; whale watching is generally best in the austral winter and spring.

How to Get There
King Shaka International Airport is the main gateway, with Richards Bay closer to many central and northern reserves. Driving from Durban takes roughly 2.5–4.5 hours depending on the property; main routes are paved, but reserve access roads may be gravel and some coastal sections require 4×4.
