Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

Overview Map
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

Africa’s oldest proclaimed game reserve and the park that saved the southern white rhino from extinction. Walking safaris here are a tradition stretching back decades — the park’s wilderness trails are considered among the finest in Africa. Set in the undulating hills of KwaZulu-Natal, it offers both rhino density and the thrill of genuine foot-based safari.

Wildlife & Ecology

The park combines hilly Hluhluwe woodland with the warmer, more open iMfolozi valleys. It is best known for both black and white rhino. Also supports elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, wild dog and a strong diversity of birds and antelope.

Best Time to Visit

The dry period from May to September gives the best visibility and brings animals towards rivers and waterholes. October to March is hot and humid, with lush vegetation, summer birding and afternoon storms; some low-lying roads can become difficult after heavy rain.

Conservation & Community

Operation Rhino, centred on the former Umfolozi reserve in the mid-20th century, helped rebuild the southern white rhino population and supplied founder animals to reserves elsewhere. This is a specific and globally important recovery story.

Activities

Self-drive and guided drives are available, but the distinctive activity is a guided wilderness trail on foot, ranging from short walks to multi-day routes in the iMfolozi wilderness area.

How to Get There

King Shaka International Airport near Durban is the main gateway; the drive to the park is about three hours on paved roads. Richards Bay Airport is closer, at roughly 1.5–2 hours by road, and the public gates are accessible in a normal car.
