Severin Safari Camp
An unfenced camp in the Kitani area of the park, spread over 25 hectares of bush with Kilimanjaro on the horizon on clear mornings. Twenty-seven units in three tiers: twenty-one octagonal tents, four junior suites named for the landmarks nearby — Mzima Springs, Roaring Rocks, Chyulu Hills and Shetani Cave — and two executive suites, Kibo and Mawenzi, whose look-out decks face the mountain. Because nothing is fenced, game crosses the grounds freely and Maasai guards walk guests to and from their tents after dark; a floodlit waterhole draws animals through the night. The camp runs on solar power where it can, and filters its waste water through lava stone, gravel and sand. Beyond game drives there are night drives, guided walks, a four-hour walk with a KWS ranger, and a spa and fitness tent. The self-catering bandas at Kitani Safari Lodge, a short distance away, are run by the same operation but are a separate proposition. Mtito Andei, on the Nairobi–Mombasa road and the SGR line, is about 45 kilometres away; Kilaguni airstrip is roughly half an hour by road.
Voyager Ziwani Camp
Not inside the park but on a private sanctuary along its western edge, which is the whole point of it: night drives and walks are permitted here in a way they are not on the public side of the boundary. The camp sits on a dam on the Sante River, with hippo, crocodile and terrapin in the water below the tents and Kilimanjaro on the skyline. Twenty-five tents in all, sixteen on the southern bank and nine on the northern, each with an en-suite bathroom and a veranda over the water; five deluxe tents are larger again. Days can be spent on game drives into Tsavo West, but the area has its own history — First and Second World War battle sites, Grogan’s Castle, and the crater lakes of Chala and Jipe within reach. The camp has its own all-weather airstrip. Power runs on a generator rather than around the clock, roughly 5am to 4pm and 6pm to midnight.
Finch Hattons
Seventeen tented suites in the southern part of the park, built around natural springs on some 35 acres, with the Chyulu Hills behind and Kilimanjaro on the skyline in clear weather. Fourteen are doubles or twins — one of them wheelchair-accessible — alongside two two-bedroom family suites and a presidential suite with a heated plunge pool on its deck. Beyond game drives there is an infinity pool, a spa with massage pavilions, a hammam, a yoga room and gym, a library and a cigar bar. The Shetani lava flow lies nearby. The camp is run by the Gehlot family and joined Virgin Limited Edition in July 2024.
Soroi Cheetah Tented Camp
Soroi Cheetah Tented Camp stands unfenced on the lower slopes of the Lumo Conservancy, a 48,000-acre private conservancy bordering Tsavo West National Park. The tents face the conservancy, the sunset and Kilimanjaro, each with a private veranda and en-suite bathroom, set in twin or king-bed layouts. There is a shared mess for dining, a campfire, a photography lounge, in-tent spa treatments and solar power. Wildlife drives are the focus, in open vehicles and also at night, alongside guided bush walks and a part-submerged photography hide at a waterhole, with overnight stays available.
Soroi Leopards Lair Cottages
Soroi Leopards Lair Cottages are five cottages built from local materials on a hill in the Lumo Conservancy, which borders Tsavo West National Park, with views over Tsavo and the Taita Hills and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro. Each has a private bathroom with an indoor shower and a veranda facing the conservancy and the sunset. There is an open kitchen, in-room spa treatments and solar power, and the setting suits small families or groups of friends. Wildlife drives include night drives, alongside guided bush walks and a part-submerged photography hide at a waterhole with overnight facilities.
Soroi Lions Bluff Lodge
Soroi Lions Bluff Lodge sits on a hilltop in the Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary, on the edge of Tsavo West National Park, with views over the plains below. Its eleven luxury suites have king beds, indoor and outdoor showers and private decks. The lodge also has a heated infinity pool, a restaurant, in-room spa treatments and 24-hour electricity. Activities include wildlife drives, night drives, guided walks and a photographic hide at a waterhole, with overnight stays possible in the hide. The lodge is wheelchair accessible.
