More rugged and scenic than its eastern twin, Tsavo West is a land of volcanic hills, ancient lava flows and the crystal-clear Mzima Springs, where hippo and crocodile can be watched from an underwater hide. Its elephants take on a distinctive red hue from dust-bathing in the local soil, and the Ngulia rhino sanctuary protects black rhino. Combined with Tsavo East, it forms one of Africa’s largest protected wildernesses, conveniently set between Nairobi and the coast.
