Wildlife & Ecology
Open grassland, acacia bush, riverine habitat and dams hold a surprising range of mammals and more than 400 recorded bird species. The park’s unfenced southern boundary is essential for seasonal movement onto the Athi–Kapiti plains.
Best Time to Visit
The dry months from June to October and January to February give easier sightings. The rains make the park green and improve birding, though tracks can become muddy; early weekday visits avoid the heaviest local traffic.
Conservation & Community
The park’s central challenge is maintaining its southern dispersal corridor amid rapid urban and infrastructure growth. Its rhino programme and role as a source population are also significant.
Activities
A walking trail and animal-orphanage or conservation-centre visits near the park can be combined with drives; these are separate facilities and should not be described as wildlife encounters inside the open park.
How to Get There
The main gate is about 10 kilometres from central Nairobi and close to Jomo Kenyatta and Wilson airports, although city traffic makes journey times variable. Access is by normal car in dry weather; a high-clearance vehicle is useful after heavy rain.
