Mikumi is the most accessible big-game park in southern Tanzania — the open, grassy Mkata floodplain often draws comparisons with the Serengeti, with lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and hippo all readily seen. Reached by a good tarmac road from Dar es Salaam, it makes an easy short safari in its own right and a natural gateway to the wilder Nyerere (Selous) and Ruaha to the south.
