Virunga Lodge
Virunga Lodge, built by Volcanoes Safaris in 2004 on a ridge about 2,300 metres up, has views of the Virunga volcanoes on one side and Lakes Burera and Ruhondo on the other. Ten guest bandas, four of them deluxe, are built in the hand-made style the company became known for. The gorilla trekking start at Kinigi is about 45 minutes’ drive away, and guests also track golden monkeys, climb the volcanoes or visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Ellen DeGeneres Campus. Evenings can include fireside talks with Gorilla Doctors, and the lodge supports village projects run by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust.
