Tucked against the Kenyan border beneath the Pare and Usambara mountains, Mkomazi is a semi-arid wilderness that shares its ecosystem with Kenya’s Tsavo. Long overlooked, it is now an important conservation story: a fenced sanctuary protects reintroduced black rhino, and an African wild dog breeding programme has re-established packs here. Dry-country specials such as gerenuk, oryx and lesser kudu add to a genuinely off-the-beaten-track safari.
