Khaudum is Namibia at its rawest — a roadless wilderness of deep Kalahari sand and dry omuramba riverbeds in the remote northeast, with no fences to neighbouring Botswana. It is strictly self-sufficient 4×4 country (two vehicles recommended), and the reward is true solitude with elephant, lion, wild dog, roan and large herds gathering at waterholes. Not for first-timers, but unforgettable for the well-prepared.
