Erindi Private Reserve

Erindi is one of Namibia’s largest private reserves and has long been one of its most reliable big-game destinations outside Etosha. A short drive from Windhoek, it protects a population of lion, elephant, black and white rhino, leopard, cheetah and wild dog across rolling savanna and waterholes. Its lodge, Old Traders, is currently closed for renovations with no confirmed reopening date (a return in 2027 is targeted) — day visitors and block bookings aren’t available in the meantime, so check directly with the reserve before planning a visit.

Wildlife & Ecology

Waterholes, thornveld, grassland and rocky hills support a broad, intensively managed wildlife community. The reserve can deliver strong predator viewing, but it is a fenced private system rather than part of an open transfrontier landscape.

Best Time to Visit

Once tourism resumes, June to October will remain the clearest dry-season window, with animals concentrated near water. This seasonal guidance does not override the current closure, and should be checked again before the reserve reopens.

Conservation & Community

The transformation of former cattle farms into a large wildlife reserve is a distinctive part of Erindi’s story. Broader conservation and public-access claims should be refreshed once the redevelopment and management changes now under way are complete.

How to Get There

The reserve lies between Okahandja, Omaruru and Otjiwarongo, about 2.5–3 hours by road from Windhoek. Detailed visitor arrival guidance is not published here while the lodge remains closed; confirm gate access and transfer arrangements directly with the operator once reopening is confirmed.
