At the foot of the Nyika plateau, Vwaza is an easy, rewarding reserve where a lagoon right by the main camp draws elephant, hippo and buffalo into view, with good antelope and over 300 bird species. A relaxed, affordable complement to Nyika.

Marsh, lake edge and woodland create a compact dry-season refuge for hippo, elephant, buffalo and antelope. The reserve’s birdlife and proximity to Nyika make it valuable as a contrasting lowland stop.
Best Time to Visit
August to November gives the strongest concentrations around remaining water, though October and November are very hot. The rains make vegetation dense and roads muddy, and some facilities may be limited.
Activities
Birding, guided walks where available and viewing from Lake Kazuni complement basic drives.
How to Get There
Vwaza is roughly three hours from Mzuzu and six to seven hours from Lilongwe by road, usually combined with Nyika. The final tracks are rough and a high-clearance vehicle is advisable.
