Africa’s third-largest lake and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Malawi National Park protects the clear waters and rocky shoreline around Cape Maclear — home to more freshwater fish species than any lake on Earth, mostly colourful cichlids found nowhere else. Wildlife & Ecology
Rocky littoral zones hold hundreds of colourful cichlid species, many with extremely restricted ranges. Fish eagles, otter, monitor lizards and vervet monkeys are visible around the shore, while terrestrial mammals remain a secondary attraction.
Best Time to Visit
May to October is dry, with clear water, cooler nights and generally settled conditions. November to April is hot and humid with rain and occasional rough lake weather, and visibility varies with wind and runoff.
Conservation & Community
UNESCO protects the park as a globally important example of freshwater biodiversity and evolution. Overfishing, catchment pressure and invasive or introduced species are more relevant themes here than a generic anti-poaching story.

How to Get There
Cape Maclear is about three-and-a-half to four-and-a-half hours by road from Lilongwe, and a similar journey from Blantyre. Most visitors transfer by road to Monkey Bay or Cape Maclear directly, while charter flights and lodge boats serve selected lake properties.
